We Are Family releases this week (end) on Thursday itself, a special festival release and an excuse to bring families together. Mothers, wives and girlfriends, who drag their unsuspecting children and spouses along for the ride, grab on to tissues to wipe their tears of emotion and sympathy. But in the same cinema hall, are the men (not to stereotype) and a few girls like me, who also have tears in their eyes, but those of utter boredom, and maybe even of grief. After all, we paid for a ticket to the biggest hoax of the year.
Karan Johar seems to be the most morally upright producer/director in Bollywood these days. So when he takes rights for Pretty Woman, or the 1998 Susan Sarandon-Julia Roberts tear-jerker Stepmom, you feel bound to go and watch it. After all, its the first time a Hindi film isnt blatantly copying Hollywood, that too without any acknowledgement. And expectations soar. Perhaps Bruce Almighty becoming God Tussi Great Ho has its advantages, you dont expect much anyway. We Are Family suffers from the TME (too many expectations) syndrome thanks to all the hype and all the moral nonsense.
